Motorcycles with gear

The applicant must be at least 18 years old.

He should be aware of traffic rules and regulations and should have a valid age proof and address proof.

Motorcycles without gear (capacity of up to 50CC)

The applicant should be a minimum of 16 years old and should have the consent of his guardian or parents.

He must be aware of traffic rules and regulations and should possess a valid age proof and address document.

Heavy commercial vehicles

The applicant should have cleared the 8th standard.

The applicant should be above the age of 18 (In some states, the minimum age for this vehicle type is 20 years).

The applicant should be trained from a government training school or one that is affiliated with the state government.

Documents Required for Driving License

How to apply for Driving License online?

Follow the steps given below to apply for Driving License Online:

  • Visit the official Sarathi website (sarathi.nic.in). Click on 'Sarathi Services', and choose the license New Driving License. Read the details and download the form.

  • Fill the form as per instructions and submit it. Before submitting the form note down the form application number.

  • After submitting, you will receive an SMS which will show you the status of your Driving License application.

  • Schedule your learner's license test by clicking 'Appointment for Online LL Exam under Online Transactions with Sarathi'.

  • The 'appointment for LL test' will let you determine the time and date of your test.

  • At the time of testing, you will have to carry the necessary documents i.e. age proof and residence proof.

How to apply offline for driving license in RTO?

The steps given below will help you understand how you can apply for Driving License offline.

  1. Get the application form (Form 1 for Learner License and Form 4 for Permanent License) i.e. Form of Motor Vehicle Driving License in India. You can download the online form from the state transport website or get it from the nearest RTO office.

  2. Fill the form and submit your age certificate and address proof to the RTO office in your area. Ask RTO officials to schedule your driving license test and pay a fee for the same.

  3. Reach the driving license test center at the given date and time. Upon passing the test, your driving license will be sent to your registered address.

  4. If you are learning driving from driving school, school officials can help you get your license.

What is the test procedure for obtaining a Driving License?

To get a driving license in India, you are required to go through a test process, which will test your driving skills as well as your knowledge of traffic rules and regulations.

An application for a permanent driving license can be made 30 days after the issuance of your driving license. The application must be filed within 180 days of the expiry of the 30-day period of the learner's license.

  • Please come at least one hour before the test.

  • Submit all relevant documents and pay the fee at the counter. If you have booked an appointment online, you will need to submit a test booking slip.

  • Different states have different testing procedures. The test will be conducted in the presence of a motor vehicle inspector.

  • Typically, you will have to go through the 'Forward 8 Shaped Track Test', 'Parallel Parking Test' or 'Reverse S Test' or 'Drive backwards on the S-Shaped Track'.

  • For the two-wheeler test, you should ensure that your feet do not touch the ground, while for the car test, you must use the rear-view mirror, use proper hand signals, and move the gear smoothly, should do.

  • You will also have to go through a written test where you will be asked questions related to traffic rules and regulations.

  • If you are applying for an online driving license, then there will be an online written test.

  • Upon passing both tests, you will be assigned a receipt, which will be your driving license until you get a copy of your driving license by speed post.
