What Are The Different Specializations In Civil Engineering?

Civil engineering is the design, execution, and maintenance of public works. This involves facilities and structures such as large scale monuments, arenas, government buildings, transportation routes along with other structures. There are various types of civil engineering that students study in Top B.Tech Colleges in Hyderabad that individually deal with their respective branch.

Structural Engineering

Structural engineering deals with structural analysis and design of structures while following all the design codes and design structures that are safe, bear or resist stresses, loads, and forces. Its specialities include wind and earthquake engineering.

Geotechnical Engineering

This branch deals with the study of soil, foundations, and bearing capacities. Its major sub-specialities include foundation and mining engineering.

Environmental Engineering

This branch deals with managing sewage, resolving pollution, and making environmental friendly designs. Its major specialities include municipal or urban, wastewater, fire protection, ecological, and sanitary engineering.

Transportation Engineering

Civil engineers who in transportation work on the planning, construction and management of transportation facilities. They design and implement the infrastructure that deals with transportation to provide a safe, convenient, comfortable, economical and environmentally compatible mode of transport. There are six major divisions related to transportation engineering: highway,  waterway, air transportation, aerospace, urban, and coastal & ocean, transportation. Sub-specialities include highway, traffic, and railway system engineering.

Water Resource Engineering

Water resource engineers deal with the design and construction of hydraulic structures. These structures include canals, dams, and water distribution system. These engineers are responsible for the design of the structure, along with the implementation and safety precautions that should be carefully followed when dealing with hydraulic structures. Major specialities in this branch are coastal, groundwater, hydraulic, and river engineering.

Earthquake Engineering

Earthquake engineers focus on the seismic forces and earthquake resistant structures. In regions where seismic activities take place, engineers must design and construct structures in such a way to resist when an earthquake occurs.

Material Engineering

This branch deals with the study of material strength, properties of the materials used in construction and ceramics. Material engineers who graduate from Civil Engineering College in Hyderabad will determine the best possible materials that can be used for a project based on its specifications.

Construction Engineering

Construction engineering involves planning and executing of designs from site development, structural, environmental, transportation and structural engineers. They should ensure that the plans which have been designed by other engineers are implemented with their exact specifications. Construction engineers supervise field work for the entire project. They are, to say, a cross between an engineer and manager as they oversee the project from start to finish and handle any issues that come up until the completion of the project.

Surveying Engineering

This branch deals with surveying and levelling of land by utilizing different instruments to map and contour the area or terrain. It is done to locate and measure property lines, lay out roads, buildings, bridges, highways, channels, pipelines for construction. Surveyors are of two types - geodetic and plane surveying.

Municipal Engineering

Municipal engineers work with city or urban government bodies on planning and maintaining the city. Most municipal engineers work directly with government professionals to make sure that the structures are properly designed and implemented.

Coastal Engineering

This branch deals with marine and coastal structures and includes embankments and groynes. These engineers, along with ensuring that the structures are erected correctly while making sure that the coastal regions are disturbed.

Tunnel Engineering

Civil engineers who specialize in this such-branch are responsible for the planning, designing, construction, safety and maintenance of tunnels. There are certain specifications that must be adhered to when building or working with tunnels for roadways, waterways or trains.
