Types of diabetes and their treatments you should know!

Diabetes is one of the biggest threats that humankind is facing. This disease has become a lifestyle of many for which most of the patients have to rely on daily medications so as to control its implications.

As per the latest statistical report, more than 30 million people suffer from diabetes. It is measured in Crude Prevalent Rate (CPR). This figure also suggests that almost 9% of the urban population suffers from diabetes whereas it is only 3% in the rural areas. In total, 8.7% of the Indian population aged between 20 years and 70 years suffer from diabetes.

Types of diabetes and their treatment

Diabetes has become a very common term. It is a chronic disease where our body loses the capability to process blood sugar due to the lack of insulin, a glucose-processing hormone causing glucose level in the blood to rise. It occurs either when insulin produced in our body is below the required content or pancreas has stopped producing it due to various anomalies. It can also happen when the insulin produced is not used by our physiology properly to reduce blood sugar level. If a person is suffering from any of the anomalies, he tends to suffer from diabetes.

In the bloodstream, the sugar is in glucose form. It is the main energy source for tissues and cells in different parts of our body. If someone develops insulin resistance or cannot produce this hormone at the required rate, glucose tends to increase in level causing many other chronic problems.

Here are the types of diabetes and their respective treatments you should know.

  1. Type I Diabetes

The reason for Type I Diabetes is not properly known to us to date. It is considered to be an autoimmune disease. In this case, the immune system is believed to attack beta cells of the pancreas that produce and secrete insulin in the bloodstream. The damage cannot be reversed. The medical world has not found what triggers this attack on the beta cells. It can either be genetic or due to environmental reasons.

The most common treatment, in this case, is to take insulin synthesized in the labs. The person has to regularly monitor his blood sugar level so as to check any abrupt changes and find out the medication dose properly. Maintaining a strict diet with proper carbohydrate, protein, and fat counting will also aid in controlling the symptoms. Regular exercise is a must along with a proper sleep cycle every day.

  1. Type II Diabetes

In this case, diabetes occurs with the resistance of insulin in the body first. This is where the physiological condition of a person is unable to use produced insulin properly to control the blood sugar level. The beta cells in the pancreas are continuously triggered to produce more insulin until it gives up meeting the high demand. The rate of insulin production reduces causing the blood sugar level to increase automatically.

The reasons for the development of Type II Diabetes are a sedentary lifestyle, lack of physical exercise, and higher BMI. This type of diabetes is also triggered by external factors and other health conditions.

Type II Diabetes

The treatment of Type II Diabetes involves a few steps mentioned below.

It all starts with weight loss. When a person loses weight and resumes his normal BMI, the stress on his body reduces. On maintaining a proper weight, the body’s capability to process blood sugar increases, thus reducing the stress on pancreatic cells.

  • A healthy diet is the second most important part of this treatment. A diet comprising of all the necessary ingredients and a calculated amount of carbohydrate. Controlling the intake is very important in our daily lifestyle as well.
  • The third step is to get over the sedentary lifestyle. A person can easily control diabetes by exercising regularly and staying active. The muscles and liver will start storing glycogen by converting glucose in the bloodstream so that it can deliver energy when necessary.
  • Medicinal treatment along with insulin therapy (if needed).
  • Regular monitoring to diagnose any abrupt changes in the blood sugar level.
  1. Gestational Diabetes

This diabetes occurs in a pregnant woman due to the formation of more hormones blocking insulin. This type of diabetes needs to be diagnosed and controlled so that it does not cause any harm to the fetus growing inside the would-be mother.

Consulting a dietician or a registered medical practitioner will help you to design a proper diet so that you can control your carbohydrate consumption depending on the current conditions. Monitoring and controlling total calorie intake depending on your body weight will solve the problem. The doctor can also prescribe medication or insulin therapy if necessary.
